About

The UIQ Open is an application competition where you submit your most creative UIQ 3 application(s) and a panel of judges selects two winners in five categories to reward each application with a UIQ phone, marketing and commercial packages, and more. On top of that, the winners will have their application featured in the UIQ Application Demo Suite 2008.

The purpose of this competition is to generate and gather applications that demonstrate the capabilities of the UIQ platform and at the same time increase the visibility of the UIQ applications and promote those companies to the public.

All types of submissions are welcome: amateur personal demos, open source projects, commercial applications - all are entitled to win as we will award entries that best show off the UIQ platform. Cool technologies, original use of functionalities, innovative solutions, even porting of successful applications from other platforms is what matters. If your application is cool or trendy or eye candy or ground-breaking or revolutionary or has the potential to make you filthy rich or is simply addictive, then don't hesitate, enter the competition: winning the UIQ Open is the perfect showcase for it!

Requirements

To enter the competition and be eligible to win, the applications must meet the following requirements:

• Be able to be installed and run on the UIQ 3 Emulator (provided with the UIQ 3 SDK) or a UIQ 3 smartphone
• Follow the UIQ 3 programming guidelines described in the Application behavior Guide
• Be of sufficient quality to ensure a good user experience (i.e. no frequent crash, poor performances, phone freeze)
• Meet all legal requirements specified in the Terms and Conditions

Categories

Awards will be given in five categories. You must select at least one category per application, but you can submit an application in several categories if you feel that it belongs to more than one. Selecting a category is only a recommendation for the judging panel, and we might decide to award an application in a category that was not selected by the participant. The applications listed for each category below are just an indication of the type of applications that we consider fitting to that category.

• Business Office, synchronization, e-mail, docs management, PDA.
• Mobility Telephony, Internet, IM, Travel, Communication, etc related applications.
• Lifestyle PIM, News, Blogs, Sharing, etc related applications.
• Entertainment Music, Photo, Video, Games, etc related applications.
• Utilities Tools and applications that don't fit in the former categories.

Timeline

The competition is until December 31, 2007. The winners will be announced early 2008.

How to Participate

The participation to the UIQ Open is absolutely free of charge! All you have to do is to submit your application(s) before the end of the competition. You can even submit an updated version of an application after your initial submition. We do not put a limit on how many time you can re-submit the same application, but, please, be reasonable and do not flood us with an updated version every week. Submit an application only when you are confident of its quality.

Although it seems tempting to wait until the last minute, there are advantages in submiting your application earlier than that: we will try to preview and test applications as they are submited, and, if we find a major problem, we might get back to you, report the problem and give you the opportunity to submit an update of your application.
